Attorney & Mediator
Please call me Alex.
Hi, my name is Alex Bettencourt and I am the owner of Bettencourt Family Law & Mediation, where I help guide people through big changes in their families. I opened this office in order to provide flexible and affordable high-quality legal and mediation services to Bay Area families.
Throughout my experiences working in family law—at a family law firm, at a non-profit, and at the Family Court—I observed the difficulties many individuals face when trying to obtain legal help or representation for their family law issues. Many people find themselves stuck in the middle. They make too much money to qualify for pro bono services but they don't make enough to pay for most attorneys' fees.
It is my goal to help bridge this gap.
I am a Bay Area native. I received my Juris Doctor degree from U.C. Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, and my Bachelor's degree from Mills College in Oakland.
I have worked almost exclusively in the area of family law since entering the legal field. I worked at a family law firm in Menlo Park prior to law school, which created a genuine interest in family law and motivated me to go after my goal of becoming an attorney. I then expanded my family law experience by working as a law clerk with Bay Area Legal Aid in the domestic violence and family law unit. During law school, I was also a Judicial Extern for the Unified Family Court at the San Francisco County Superior Court. After graduating, I returned to the San Francisco County Unified Family Court as a Fellow.
My other legal experience includes work as an intern at the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and as a Certified Law Clerk at the Solano County District Attorney's Office, where I gained valuable courtroom experience.
My mediation experience and training includes participation in the U.C. Hastings Mediation Clinic, where I provided mediation services to self-represented litigants in the Small Claims Division of the San Francisco County Superior Court. I also earned a mediation certificate by completing 40 hours of mediation training.

I strive to guide clients through the big changes in their family with the least amount of disturbance to their life as possible. I want my clients to move forward and avoid unnecessary emotional and financial costs during their time of transition.
Life Outside of the Law
When I'm not helping my clients and tending to my business, I enjoy trying new restaurants, going for a run or urban hike with my partner and our 2 dogs, and pretending to be an interior decorator.
